Apple today announced via press release that iTunes 10 had 3 million downloads and that in the first 48 hours, 1/3 of those downloads translated to a Ping user.
Ping is Apple’s music social networking site. It lets you follow such artists like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, U2, and Yo-Yo Ma. Just like any social networking site, fans could see their favorite artists’ tour dates, new releases, read comments and create conversations centered around music with not just artists but fellow fans.
“One-third of the people who have downloaded iTunes 10 have joined Ping,“ said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services. “As many more people download iTunes 10 in the coming weeks, we expect the Ping community to continue growing.“
